Drovers make late plays to beat Stars

CHICKASHA — The Drover men grabbed a nail biter of a victory on Thursday night at the USAO Fieldhouse, defeating the Oklahoma City Stars 60-57 in the final seconds of the game.

The Drovers (12-7, 5-6) led nearly the entire first half and entered halftime with 33-28 advantage. But the Stars preserved to make it a game, tying it up with nine minutes remaining in regulation, at which point the game began to go back-and-forth.

With just four and a half minutes left, the Drovers trailed by one when Graham Faulkner, who had entered the game just minutes before, knocked in a three to put the Drovers in the lead. He repeated that performance to again give the Drovers a lead just two minutes later.

Up 57-55, Kenneth Durham scored a jumper to double USAO’s lead. OCU’s Kaleb Smith had a successful layup to bring the game back to a single score difference. A few turnovers later, USAO’s Jahseth Lloyd was fouled, sending him to line to solidify the three-point victory.

Norris Rumph led the team with 13 points. He also had eight rebounds and four assists.

Faulkner, Durham and Brandon Cutler each scored another eight for USAO. Lloyd was the only player on team to rebound in the double digits, collecting 12. He also had six points.

As a team, the Drovers shot 38 percent from the field, as compared to the Stars’ 35.7 percent.

The Drovers travel to Claremore to take on (20) Rogers State at 5 p.m. on Saturday. They then move on to play Saint Gregory’s in Shawnee on Thursday before returning home for Senior Day on Feb. 16 against Mid-America Christian. Tip off is scheduled for 5 p.m.

It was USAO’s third annual Pink Out Cancer game, and Drovers Against Cancer raffled off the players’ signed warm up shirts.
