Area football fans will have to plug some new addresses into their GPS units this year as OSSAA re-aligns the football districts state-wide.
In 5A, Chickasha, Altus, Duncan and Macarthur move from District 1 to District 2 this fall with holdovers Ardmore, Capitol Hill and Durant.
Two of the three 5A teams remaining in District 2 are probably very glad to see realignment.
Ardmore went 4-7, with all four wins coming in district play. They pitched a 28-0 shutout over Noble and whitewashed Capitol Hill 47-0, both at home. They picked up a 34-15 road win at Harrah and a 34-15 decision at home over Durant.
Durant finished with a 4-6 record (3-4 in district), winning at Noble 34-13, just squeeking by Harrah at home 21-20 and drubbing the HillRedskins at the Hill 63-0.
The hapless Redskins will be on everyone’s homecoming game invitation list, going winless and getting out-scored 476-36.
Alex will see a few new faces this year as Bowlegs, Davenport, Oklahoma Christian Academy and Sasakwa move into B-2. Paoli, Central High, Cyril, Fox and Macomb stay put to round out the new ten-team group.
Caddo and Ryan, which accounted for two losses last year, are gone; the Cowboys dropping down to Class C.
Sasakwa moves up from C, where they went 8-3 overall with two losses coming in district play to ranked teams and the third a 51-0 mercy loss to fifth-ranked Seiling in round one of the playoffs.
Davenport will make some noise, going 10-2 last year and reaching the second round of the playoffs, where ninth-ranked Laverne ended their season 42-28. They finished the regular season ranked fifth, losing only at Kiefer 14-12.
Bowlegs finished at 2-8, their only wins coming at Agra and Prue, and OCA (3-7) got one of their three wins at Bowlegs 44-22 in week ten. They also took advantage of weak sisters Agra and Prue for their other two wins.
In Class A Minco stays in District 2 but Rush Springs was in the middle of some shakeup moving from District 4 to District 5.
Hinton, Okeene and Pioneer move into A-2 to join the Dawgs, Cashion, Crescent and Wellston.
Hinton had one win last year, a 14-0 shutout at Walters, and Pioneer went 3-7, with all three wins coming in district play (Mooreland, Hooker and Chisholm in a late three-game spurt). Okeene should be in the playoff mix again this year after going 8-3 and losing at ninth-ranked Watonga 34-8 in round one of the post-season.
Rush, Maysville and Elmore City make the move to District 5 this year, cozying up with holdovers Dibble, Stratford, Wayne and Wynnewood.
The new alignment won’t help the Redskins, who had two wins last year.
Dibble was the only team to not make the playoffs, going 3-7. Stratford went 7-5, dropping a 27-0 second round game to top-ranked Tonkawa, Wayne went 6-5, losing a 22-21 heartbreaker to seventh-ranked Sallisaw in week eleven and Wynnewood used a strong finish to take a 5-4 record into the post-season, where they were knocked out by fifth-ranked Talahina 46-0.
But that was last year and this is this year, so anything can happen. Everyone will have their chances to create their own story for this fall starting on Tuesday, August 10, when practice starts.
