Dufur gains familiarity during summer

CHICKASHA —

Chickasha High School junior forward Datious Dufur spent last season adjusting to new teammates and new surroundings, but that experience and this summer has helped him find a comfort zone.

Dufur got significant minutes during the Fightin' Chicks' summer league games in Newcastle and Anadarko last month.

"We got chemistry with the team," Dufur said. "I got to see how they play at a fast pace and keep the tempo up. We went 15-1, I think we're going to have a great team."

Dufur's work wasn't limited to team activities, however. He said he's been in the gym as much as possible in his free time.

"I've spent a lot of time in the gym so far this summer, getting in wherever I can," Dufur said. "I've been lifting some weights and just trying to become a better player."

Dufur said the main thing he wanted to work on this summer was his jumpshot. It seems to have helped, as Dufur could be seen draining threes during an intermission at the Chickasha boys basketball skills camp Monday.

A long, lanky forward, Dufur has the height to play down low but the skill set to both score from the outside and to play perimeter defense, something his length helps him do.

Dufur said his defense is another area he wants to improve during the offseason.

Last season, Dufur played mostly with the junior varsity squad, but also saw some minutes with the varsity.

If he continues his improvement and builds on last season, Dufur will be a player who can create matchup problems for opponents.

With a large percentage of Chickasha's scoring from last year having graduated, the door is open for Dufur to step in during the 2012-2013 season and have an impact with his versatiity.

There is a fine line between parenting and coaching. Sure, sometimes they end up crossing paths. I, for one, learned many life lessons in sports, and that's probably why I want to work in that area. But for the most part, they are separate, and it should stay that way.
