MINCO —
Every athlete hopes to have an opportunity to continue playing his or her sport on the next level. For Minco's Carrie Farmer, that hope became a reality on Wednesday afternoon.
Farmer signed his letter of intent to play football at Northwestern Oklahoma State University in Alva, Okla as a center.
"It feels good," Farmer said. "It's something I've wanted to do since I was a little kid."
Farmer said his choice was between NWOSU and Wayland Baptist in Plainview, Texas.
"The coaches there are really similar to my high school coaches," Farmer said. "Something about it up there just made me feel at home."
Farmer's parents, Carrie Sr. and Kay, were present at the signing, and both said they were very proud of what their son has accomplished, and also grateful to the school and city of Minco.
"We couldn't ask for any more support from the town and the team," Carrie Sr. said. "The coaches are wonderful here. We're really proud for our son, he's the first one of us to go to college, so it's a special occasion."
Minco head football coach Clint Warren said it is relatively rare for small-school kids to get the opportunity to play college football.
"There's not a lot of class A kids that get to go on to the next level and play college football," Warren said. "Carrie is one of those kids who will go and make it, and do well."
Becoming a college football player is just the latest in a number of athletic achievements for Farmer this season. Farmer was chosen by the Oklahoma Coaches Association as an Oklahoma All-Star, and also named to the 2012 All-State football team.
Farmer wants to major in either engineering or criminal justice when he begins classes at Northwestern Oklahoma State.
