CHICKASHA —
The Fightin' Chicks boys' basketball team couldn't get over the hump at home against No. 4 El Reno on Tuesday night.
Chickasha lost the game 63-50, and although it was able to come back from double-digit deficits multiple times, was never able to take the lead from the Indians.
The Fightin' Chicks are 10-8 with four games remaining in the regular season.
Jacobi Davis was Chickasha's leading scorer with 16 points, but foul trouble kept him on the bench during a crucial stretch in the fourth quarter during which El Reno was able to seal the victory.
Austin McRay scored 12 points in the game, and Joey Sylvester and Al Wolf added six points apiece. Wolf and Sylvester were held scoreless in the second half after contributing 8 of Chickasha's 13 first quarter points.
"We needed a big game from Joey," Merritt said. "That was where our advantage was. They didn't start anyone over probably 6' 1" and we didn't take advantage of that."
E.J. Golightly scored five points, Montana Stonecalf scored three, and Dakota Goombi scored two.
The Chicks were only down by four points after three quarters, and pulled within two points early in the fourth quarter. The score was 42-40 before El Reno made its final run to pull away.
The Indians went on a 14-2 tear to put the Chicks away for good.
"They just broke us down, it wasn't really any offensive stuff," Merritt said. "It was just YMCA stuff. He broke us down, the help guy would come, and he would dish it to wherever the help guy came from."
El Reno started the game quickly, jumping out 18-8 in the first quarter before Chickasha slowed them down to pull in 18-13 at the end of the quarter.
"We got down about ten because we weren't rebounding the basketball," Merritt said. "It's hard to do anything when you can't rebound. Their best offense was to just come down, throw it up on the rim and then go get it."
Chickasha plays Guthrie on the road Friday night, and Merritt expects another tough game.
"They're a physical team with great athletes," Merritt said. "If we don't rebound in that game, it will be a lot worse.
The boys play Guthrie at 8 p.m. Friday at Guthrie High School.
