No. 2 Weatherford gets by No. 3 Chicks

WEATHERFORD – Weatherford pitcher Dillon Overton’s “last lick” two-run double got the Eagles by Chickasha 4-3 in a big early season game Friday.

The Chicks, ranked third in 5A, were in town for a “top-three” matchup with the second-ranked 4A Eagles and were totally handcuffed by Overton, who struck out 13 before being pulled after finishing the sixth with a 2- 0 lead.

“He pitched unbelievable,” Chickasha coach Brad Gore said about the Eagle’s southpaw ace. “He already signed with OU but he’s very liable to get drafted right out of high school. He’s legit.”

The first two Weatherford runs were both unearned. An overthrow at third on a hit-and run in the third frame scored the first run of the game then a wind-aided error on a high infield popup and a sacrifice bunt in the home sixth spotted the hosts to a 2-0 lead.

Eagle skipper Todd Gaunt opted to go to Jake Barrios to throw the seventh and the Chicks feasted on him, tying the game up on back-to-back RBI doubles from catcher Devan Shepard and first baseman Chris Nye.

Austin Posey, pinch running for Nye, scored from third on an overthrow and the Chicks took the field going into the bottom of the seventh with a 3-2 lead.

But Gore went to Braden Cook to close, and after a leadoff walk, he dinged Barrios to set the table for Overton, whose walkoff double bailed the Eagles out 4-3 and got Barrios the win in one inning of relief work.

Colin Hightower got start and the no-decision for the Chicks, fanning nine and allowing just two hits in six innings’ work.

“I was really proud of our guys,” Gore said. “Colin pitched really well and they fought back against a very tough team in true Chickasha style.”
