Parkinson, Coggan named scholar-athletes

CHICKASHA — In his first year of eligibility for the award, USAO junior Scott Parkinson was named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete.

He is one of 15 players in the state to be named to the list, which is complete with 315 players nationwide. Players must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 and be at least a junior to qualify.

Parkinson, a physical education junior, has a cumulative GPA of 3.56.

On the field for the Drovers, Parkinson scored USAO’s only goal in a 1-1 tie against Oklahoma City in the SAC Tournament and helped out with two assists this season.

But more importantly for the Drovers, Parkinson anchored the back line that allowed just 11 goals all season and earned 11 shutouts.

In addition to being a leader both on the field and in the classroom, Parkinson double-duties as the head boys’ soccer coach and assistant girls’ soccer coach at Chickasha High School.

Already this year, Parkinson was named Sooner Athletic Conference Defensive Player of the Year and All-SAC First Team. In 2011, he was named an NAIA All-America Third Team recipient and SAC Defensive MVP. As a freshman, he was named All-Conference Second Team.

He is from Liverpool, England, and is the son of James and Susan Parkinson.

USAO senior Erin Coggan was named a Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete on Friday for the second consecutive year.

She is one of 17 players in the state to be named to the list, which is complete with 492 players nationwide. Players must maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.5 to qualify.

Coggan, an education senior, quickly found a balance between her soccer career and her academic pursuits. The student-athlete has a cumulative GPA of 3.58.

She plans to graduate in April with her bachelor’s degree and hopes to return to Texas, where she grew up, and follow a career in elementary education.

In her four years on the soccer team, Coggan played in nearly every game for the Drovers and scored eight goals, including four her senior year.

One of her athletic highlights, Coggan said, was scoring the game-winning goal in the Sooner Athletic Conference Finals at Oklahoma City University to win the SAC and send the Drovers to the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history.

Coggan is from Cedar Hill, Texas, and is the daughter of Barry and Karen Coggan.
