VERDEN —
The Verden Lady Tigers survived a close call against the Alex Lady Longhorns on Friday night.
The Lady Tigers won the game 36-35, winning after Alex missed a last-second corner 3-pointer that could have won it.
With the win, Verden improved to 6-5 while the Lady Longhorns dropped to 3-6 this season.
Katie Embrey led Verden in scoring with 16 points, followed by Cheyenne Hannah with 10.
For Alex, Ashley William was the leading scorer in the game with 17 points, including eight in the fourth quarter.
The game was tied at 32 with 2:06 to play, and Alex's Autumn Zachary was fouled on a 3-point shot.
She made one out of three free throws to give the Longhorns a 33-32 lead.
Alex got the ball back on a turnover. Zachary was fouled but missed the free throws.
Hannah was fouled by Williams on a drive to the basket, and made both free throws to put Verden up 34-33.
With 28.4 seconds left, Williams got a putback for Alex on the third offensive rebound of the possession, putting the Lady Longhorns up 35-34.
With 10.9 seconds left, Verden was taking the ball out under the Alex basket. Hannah cut to the basket and was fouled on a layup, and made both free throws for a 36-35 lead.
Alex had to go the length of the court to shoot the final shot, a missed 3 in the right corner, ending the game.
Alex will play again at the Longhorn Classic Jan. 7, and Verden's next game is 6:30 p.m. Friday night at Sterling.
"We're going to go play at No. 9 Sterling at their place, so I just want to give it all we've got and make it a great game," head coach Ryan Perry said.
Perry said the winter break practices will have a broad focus as the team looks to improve in all areas.
"Practice is the same on day one as it is on the last day of the year," Perry said.
