Chickasha girls end season with area loss to Collinsville

SAPULPA, Okla. — The Chickasha High School girls basketball team’s season ended Saturday with an overtime loss to Collinsville in the area playoffs, one game short of the state tournament.

The Lady Chicks lost 63-58, in a game it was unlikely for them to even be playing in. Chickasha finished the season 13-13, matching the win total of the past three seasons combined for the team.

Collinsville had Chickasha down 12 points with seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the Lady Chicks fought all the way back to tie the game at 52 at the end of regulation.

Some missed free throws and costly turnovers prevented Chickasha from completing the upset, but the team didn’t lack in effort, head coach Christy Edelen said.

“That’s how you want to finish your season if it has to end,” Edelen said. “With everything that you have left in you out there on that floor. Our girls gave it their all; they fought, they scratched, they clawed, and that’s what you want.”

Sierra Hamilton scored seven points in her final game as a Lady Chick, and fouled out with 1:51 left in regulation. Although visibly and understandably disappointed after the game, Hamilton grew into a team leader during her career, and was able to play a key role in the program’s turnaround under Edelen.

“Sierra and Hannah, they have some great things to hang their senior year on, and they’re awesome girls,” Edelen said.

Dominique Golightly finished with 26 points and 11 rebounds to lead Chickasha, ending her extraordinary freshman season. Golightly scored eight points in the fourth quarter and six in overtime. She also had a number of steals late as Collinsville tried to run out the clock in the fourth quarter.

Kieley Clift was Chickasha’s other player in double figures with 13 points, and the combination of her and Alex Stewart playing defense at the top of Chickasha’s zone sparked the team’s comeback.

Freshman center Taylor Sylvester scored seven points, all in the first quarter, and Kelsi Gore scored three points. Chickasha played much of the second half with three freshmen on the floor, who just last year were playing in middle school games.

“At the end of the game, we had three freshmen, a sophomore and a junior on the floor,” Edelen said. “The future is bright for Chickasha basketball.”
