Chicks try to finish strong at Duncan

CHICKASHA — The Chickasha High School football team has a chance to match its win total from last year by beating Duncan in a season-ending road game Friday.

The Fightin' Chicks are currently 4-5, overall and 2-4 in district 5A-1. Although out of playoff contention, head coach Tom Cobble said he and his team have been talking for some time about their desire to beat the Demons.

Duncan is 5-4 overall and 4-2 in district play. The Demons have played a tough schedule, losing to quality teams, including Guthrie and Carl Albert out of district and MacArthur (Lawton) and Del City in district play.

"They're as good as their record," head coach Tom Cobble said. "If we can pull off a victory we'll both be 5-5. Their early-season schedule was a little tougher and they're a little more seasoned than we are. We just have to go play hard and get over the hump."

The Fightin' Chicks have had an up-and-down season, and had a couple of close losses to Altus (27-21) and Ardmore (34-24) that could have changed the course of the season had things gone differently.

"A year ago, we either won or got blown out bad," Cobble said. "This year, we kind of hung in there better."

The Chickasha offense has been a work-in-progress all year, and has continued to develop both in the running game and the passing game.

Quarterback Brandon Wright will be the starter at quarterback again for the Chicks. Usual starter Cade Morris is unable to throw, and he will be in a cast for six weeks with a broken thumb. He will still play on defense.

Cobble said the offense has improved dramatically since the beginning of the season, in part due to a change in the emphasis of the run game.

"What we tried really hard to do is keep our blocking schemes for the linemen the same no matter what our backfield set was," Cobble said. "We went to the jet quarterback option. It's a little big simpler and a little bit easier to block."

The game against Duncan is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Friday at Duncan High School.

"We stressed finishing. Finish the job. Finish the game. Finish the season," Cobble said. "Leave the Chickasha program better than it was a year ago."
