Minco event will feature history, games for family

MINCO — Calling all history buffs and supporters of agriculture and education: saddle up and head to Minco for the Heros and History Celebration on Oct. 20.

The event starts at 11 a.m. with pony rides, a cattle drive, a cowboy shoot out, quilting and farrier demonstrations. Each child will take home their own painted horseshoe and quilted ornament.

Other activities include a whisker and/or mustache contest and door prizes throughout the day. Some of the prizes include: a Radio Flyer wagon, a Red Rider BB gun, a Paul Cameron Smith cowboy statue, smooth ostrich quill, Justin boots, a Henry Lever Action Golden Boy .22 Rifle.

Patrons are welcome--and encouraged--to dress in western wear.

A $20 advance covers a chuck wagon dinner, a R.W. Hampton concert and entrance for every hourly drawing. Tickets for the rifle and boot drawings are sold separately.

All the proceeds for this day full of historical fun benefit the scholarship recipients of the Jesse Chisholm Scholarship Foundation.

Levi Clifton, Executive Director of the Jesse Chisholm Scholarship Foundation, said that the goal of the foundation is to keep the trail alive through education and imagination.

The history of Jesse Chisholm, of Chisholm Trail fame, and the western lifestyle is celebrated.

"Most people think of Jesse Chisholm as a cowboy, but he was really an entrepreneur," Clifton said.

Chisholm was of Scottish and Cherokee descent and spoke 13 Native American dialects. The trail that Chisholm took was smoother and had more streams, Clifton said, so it became popular. Chisholm was often seen on the trail. He used his wagon as a general store.

To be eligible for the scholarship, the student must have a minimum 2.5 GPA, classify as a junior in college with the focus of their education must be in ranching, animal husbandry or science (if large, livestock animal), farming, or in the rodeo/western lifestyle.

Clifton said the reason that the student must be a junior is that because students tend to change majors within the first two years of college, this keeps the scholarship money within the agricultural and western lifestyle community, which the foundation wants to preserve.

There is no age limit for the scholarship, so nontraditional students are welcome to apply.

The application for the scholarship is on the Jesse Chisholm Scholarship Foundation website at ahistoryofthechisholmtrail.com.

Clifton said she excited for children to see the historical demonstrations, because it will give them a live demonstration of history.

Clifton started the organization in 2007. Clifton said she has traveled all over the Chisholm Trail which has fueled her enthusiasm.

Minco City Council and Duncan representatives have been big supporters of spreading the culture of the Chisholm trail, Clifton said. Currently, there are a lot of people in farming, ranching and radio who are involved in the foundation.

"These are people who have the same amount of enthusiasm as I do," Clifton said. Clifton said that she would like to see more of Grady County get involved in celebrating and supporting the historical marker.

A book about the history of the Chisholm trail is in the works, which Clifton hopes to get printed soon.
