CHICKASHA — Grady County Oklahoma Home and Community Education (OHCE) took a "Trip to the Orient" for their winter council on Jan. 22.

The bird of paradise centerpieces, tea ceremony cutlery, chopstick and fortune cookies spread across the long tables in the community room at the Grady County Fairgrounds served as part of the group's cultural enrichment.

OHCE promotes learning about other cultures. Rosalie Bush encouraged the Grady County OHCE groups to select different cultures to use as themes for their individual meetings. In the past, Bush said that an OHCE member who had visited Thailand on a mission trip had used a Thailand theme. Other themes have included a Mexican Cinco de Mayo theme, Oktoberfest and "Merry Old England."

Bush suggested that members visit the many different festivals around the state of Oklahoma for ideas.

Doing so, "enriches our lives and adds interest that we don't always have," Bush said.

Tax season brings a lot of paper waste, but OHCE has plans to aid companies and individuals in getting rid of paper safely, Margaret Scott said. They may be able to hire a shredding truck for free to help shred sensitive documents. There are also future plans to provide safe recycling for hazardous materials.

"Water for All" raises money to give water wells to people in third world countries. OHCE is also part of the state's initiative for health living, including locating safe places in the community to exercise, Scott said.

Shirley Burns announced that the OHCE Style show would be coming down the runway in Spring 2013 at 6 p.m., April 9 at the Canadian Valley Technology Center in Chickasha. The theme is "fashion forward," which will demonstrate styles from the past on towards tomorrow. Burns said they are looking for entries as well as volunteers to help on the evening of the event.

Myrtle Elston said that OHCE Week would involve sponsoring the emergency food pantry as well as getting the word about OHCE out to the community via radio and news advertising

"We want to let the community know what we stand for and what we do for the community," Elston said.

The OHCE cookbook committee recently turned over their cookbook to the printers on Jan. 17, Burns said. They are $20 each. About 200 cookbooks have already been sold. Planning for the OHCE craft show will begin in May, Kathy Stidham said. The annual quilt exhibit will be taking place every other year instead of annually, Stidham.

Janice Corley is helping to compile the history of Grady County OHCE. She asked members to save newspaper clippings of Grady County OHCE events from the past year. She would like to use them for an upcoming archive of the organization.

Susan Routh announced that the Southwest District OHCE meeting would be coming up on Friday, March 29 in Weatherford, Oklahoma. There is an $18 registration fee. The day before the conference, on March 28, there will be a meet and greet at the Stafford Air and Space Museum, which Routh called "the best kept secret in Weatherford, maybe the best kept secret in southwest Oklahoma."
