Shabby chic is a style that is all about repurposing older items while still letting the past peek through. Callie Shabby Chic proudly embodies this concept.
The boutique in Alex, Okla. is located in a building with many past lives. It has been a pizza parlor, an apartment, a liquor store, a cafe and perhaps most interesting--and still visible--the Alex jail.
Callie Shabby Chic owners, Linda Wolfe and Patty Baker, said that they considered removing the bars from the windows, but changed their minds. They painted the bars white to match the bricks on the building, which they also painted white up to the steel roof awning.
"I was tickled to death to get the building," Wolfe said.
Wolfe and Baker have been friends for 25 years and had always wanted to open a store together. The store was named after Callie, a cat that Wolfe had for 23 years. Callie was given to Wolfe from Baker's daughter. Callie's picture will also be on display in the boutique.
The pair have been working hard to get the store ready for opening day, in some cases staying up until 3 a.m. The business partners said that their husbands have been helpful as well.
Callie's Shabby Chic is due to open its doors on Saturday, Dec. 1 with holiday hours, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. During the holiday season, the store will be open on Sunday afternoons from 1 to 5 p.m. and will be closed on Mondays.
The store carries fashions for women and teens, accessories, home decor and gifts. Saks and Coach purses will be sold in the shop, but Wolfe said they will price the items as reasonably as possible.
"We want to have nice stuff, but priced for the area," Wolfe said.
Bedding, towels as well as gifts for showers and birthdays will also be included. Callie Shabby Chic expect to carry items from Brighton, Jim Shore and Fossil. Wolfe said that Jim Shore decor is in demand right now, and they expect to have Jim Shore Christmas decorations in stock.
"A lot of people in our community have to travel so far to get a gift," Baker said.
"We're trying to get more people to come to Alex so that its worth the drive here," Wolfe said.
