Chamber of Commerce plans for September bike ride

CHICKASHA — The Chickasha Chamber of Commerce is in the process of planning a local event that will not only encourage more proactive, healthy citizens, but it will also give the city a chance to clean up and show off its charm.

The event will be named the Rock Island Ride, and is projected to be held Saturday,

Sept. 21, 2013. This multi-distance bicycle ride will begin at the historic Rock Island Train Depot.

"We are planning 10 miles, 30 mile, 50 mile and 62 mile distance rides," Donna Standridge, the Director of Chamber Programs said. "The 10 mile is more like a family fun ride."

The Chamber will provide rest stops every 10-12 miles and will provide safety at all county intersections. The bicyclists participating will have to adhere to all bicycle state laws.

"This is the first event and we're hoping it will draw at least 200 riders," Standridge said. "The County Commissioners signed a proclamation willing to support it."

The Chamber has complied a committee made up of experienced riders to help make the specific routes as friendly and entertaining as possible. According to Standridge, the committee is hoping to get a local health care provider to support the event.

Bud Andrus, the president of the Chamber explained other cities success with similar events. A number of cities, Andrus explained, have great success including Duncan and Wichita Falls.

Pre-registration for the race will cost $30 and after the undetermined cut off date, the charge will go up to $35. A race t-shirt will be provided. An age limit is not concrete but Standridge proposes riders need to be at least twelve.

The purpose, Standridge explained, is the show off the town and for residents to take pride in the city, especially the downtown district.

"I'm hoping for some downtown promotional sales," Standridge said. "We need to clean up and show off our town."

The event is scheduled to begin at 7 a.m. and after a title sponsor presentation, the bikers will take off around 7:30 a.m.

What's left to discuss, the Chamber explained, is necessary signage on race day and some safety officers helping patrol the streets. The Rock Island Ride will be officially approved at the next city council meeting Monday, Jan. 21.
