CHICKASHA —
It was homecoming night for the Chickasha High School wrestling team, but an outbreak of the flu put a damper on the competition against Harrah as the Fightin' Chicks wrestled on their home mat for the first time since Dec. 6.
Chickasha was forced to forfeit five weight classes, essentially putting the dual win out of reach, and the Chicks lost 48-28.
"It's going around everywhere," head coach Chad Randle said about the flu. "I had a couple of kids get it last night, another one the other day, just something you have to deal with. You just pray and hope that it doesn't happen close to regionals."
Even though the team forfeited matches at 113, 126, 132, 160 and 182 pounds, most of the wrestlers that did participate for the Chicks won their matches.
After Monica Barrera was named Homecoming Queen, escorted by David Eakers, the dual got off to a rough start for the Chicks with Lamar Neff getting pinned in the first period at 106 pounds.
Head coach Chad Randle said he thought the homecoming night would have a positive effect on his team.
"You never know, kids are kids," Randle said. "You would hope it would get them fired up a little bit. It brings a bigger audience for my kids, so that's great. And this year, we had one of our managers win the homecoming deal, so I'm happy about that."
Dakota Resendez made up some of the ground at 120 pounds, beating Ryan Rutherford in a 4-0 decision. Even after winning, Randle said he wanted more out of Resendez.
"He won his match out there, but I told him I wasn't very happy because he just wasn't going hard enough," Randle said. "There's no doubt he's going to be good, but that's what we talk about: How good? We can't rest where we're at, and you've got to trust me in what I'm talking about."
After three forfeits, Eakers came up at 138 pounds, and took a 6-2 lead over Jace Curry before pinning him with 1:34 left in the second period.
Triston Hill beat Mickey Gore 14-0, but the story of the match and several that followed was Chickasha wrestlers not finishing pins when they got the advantage on their opponents.
Hill scored three near falls in the 145 pound match, but could never complete the pin, having to settle for a major decision victory.
Coy Richardson scored a near fall in his 152 pound match, which he won 9-5, and Sam Richardson had a near fall that put him up 9-5 on Colton Musick before Musick pinned him in the third period while Richardson was up 9-7.
"Sometimes they're getting too aggressive over the top," Randle said. "I try to teach them to get aggressive, then right when you get to that deal you've got to be expecting the reverse, the change of momentum the other way, and I don't think we're doing that well enough right now."
Riley Williams and Jacoby Brown both won their matches by fall late in the second period.
"I was happy with a few things," Randle said. "David and Jacoby are always going to go hard. If they lose, there is no doubt they're going to go hard. I'm trying to teach that to some of these other kids, and I use David as an example because his sophomore year, he didn't know how to go hard."
Chickasha will need to recover from the flu bug quickly with the district duals coming up Tuesday against Lawton MacArthur, Western Heights and Noble.
"The problem is, Mac is in our district, and they're loaded. They don't have a weak weight. We have a lot of pups," Randle said. "We'd have to pull a lot of upsets on Mac. We're going to be a very big underdog with them."
Chickasha will wrestle MacArthur at 5 p.m., Western Heights at 6:15 p.m. and Noble at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Chickasha High School Activity Center.
