First of many for Bridge Creek soccer

— The Bridge Creek High School girls soccer team earned the first regular season victory in the program’s short history Monday night with a win over 6A Yukon’s junior varsity squad.

The Lady Bobcats won the game 2-1, and are now 1-1 this season. Head coach Jason Sanders said the team doesn’t seem interested in dwelling too much on one game, but looks right to the next task.

“We have a pretty good group of girls that stays kind of even keeled, and they just kind of worried about their business,” Sanders said. “I thought the girls were basically happy but looking forward to the next game.”

Yukon scored an early goal to put Bridge Creek in an early hole, but the Lady Bobcats didn’t panic, which Sanders said is a result of the collective experience of the players.

“I was really impressed by that,” Sanders said. “A lot of it has to do with girls that have played a long time. They just kept plugging.”

Bridge Creek was playing without one of its midfielders, Megan Mayfield, a freshman who missed the game with the flu. Sanders said it took some time for the team to adjust to the lineup change.

“I think we had to adjust to having a different girl up top, and we started getting the ball to Autumn [Gilchrest], who is our center midfielder, and she started distributing,” Sanders said. “We were having trouble getting the ball to the middle of the field early on, and once we did that, we really controlled the game.”

Gilchrest got an assist on Bridge Creek’s first goal, scored by Carly Hodge, and Sanders used a basketball analogy when talking about the sophomore.

“Of course I’m a basketball coach, but I told [Gilchrest] last night, ‘you’re a point guard,’” Sanders said. “She distributes.”

Sheena Martin assisted Hodge on the go-ahead goal later in the game.

“[Autumn] and Carly and Sheena —Sheena is a sophomore who I think is equally as talented—they just have really good rapport together, and I think the sky is the limit for those girls,” Sanders said.

Sanders said defense is the area where the Lady Bobcats have the most room for improvement, partially due to their youth. Sara Martinez is the only senior defender, and the rest are freshmen.

“We’ve really got to shore up,” Sanders said. “It’s improving. We don’t have nearly as much experience on the defensive end. We have a senior, Sara Ramirez, who has played before but it has been a few years, and she is really rapidly improving. To be the team I think we can be next year, that’s where we’re putting a lot of our focus.”

Bridge Creek played Douglass last night, and will next play at 5:30 p.m. March 15 at Cache High School.
