Chicks dominate Owls

ELGIN, Okla. — For the second time this season, the Chickasha High School boys basketball team throttled the Elgin Owls, this time on the road.

The Fightin' Chicks improved to 3-1 with a 74-37 win over Elgin on Tuesday night, and now have to look ahead to what should prove to be a challenging game against Anadarko on Friday.

Chickasha got the usual productive offensive performances from point guard E.J. Golightly and center Joey Sylvester. Golightly led the team with 23 points, and Sylvester had 21 after scoring only six in the first half.

The starters were taken out of the game early in the third quarter, when Chickasha had the game wrapped up.

Elgin actually led after the first quarter, 16-15.

"We came out flat, we beat them by 29 last time and I just don't think the kids were locked in," head coach Bryan Merritt said. "We tried to get them that way, we told them that if they didn't win [against Elgin] then that win against Western Heights wouldn't have mattered at all."

In the second quarter, the game was tied at 23 when Chickasha went on a 9-0 run, and the Fightin' Chicks took a 35-25 lead into halftime.

Chickasha out-scored Elgin 23-6 in the third quarter, looking more like the team that beat Elgin earlier this year.

"Datious [Dufur]'s defensive effort on the ball  there with about three minutes to go in the second and then into the third really helped us because we had a really hard time driving it to the rim," Merritt said.

Sylvester led the third quarter charge, scoring easily against Elgin's post defenders.

"We got deep in there and just pumped it into Joey a bunch, and it was pretty much over from there," Merritt said. "Him and E.J. have to score. We've got to lean on them a lot, because they're the only ones who have really done a lot in varsity competition."

Up next for Chickasha is a game against 4A Anadarko, an undefeated team ranked No. 3 in the state.

"We're really excited about that game," Merritt said. "I told them in the locker room; that's why you play high school basketball. You play the game for the one coming up Friday night."

Anadarko hasn't played a close game yet this season, with its closest game coming Monday night in an 18-point win against Altus.

"We have some confidence against Anadarko," Merritt said. "They lost five starters, but they're playing really good, but their kids aren't that experienced either."

Chickasha is scheduled to play Anadarko at 8 p.m. Friday at the Chickasha High School Activity Center.
