Chickasha girls beat Thomas Edison in area playoffs

BIXBY, Okla. — The Chickasha High School girls basketball team trailed by double digits for most of the first half, and looked to be done for the season before making a second-half comeback to advance in the area playoffs Thursday night, and is now one game away from the state tournament.

The Lady Chicks won 67-64 over Thomas Edison, led by 20 points from Kieley Clift and Dominique Golightly, and 16 from Alex Stewart, who sparked the comeback with a 3-point barrage in the third quarter.

Chickasha had a size advantage, but Thomas Edison was quicker and more aggressive early on, especially on defense, where a full-court zone press was the Lady Chicks’ undoing.

The Lady Chicks started the game poorly, turning the ball over often against the press, but they were able to stay within 8-10 points for most of the first half. Chickasha trailed 34-26 at halftime.

In the third quarter, Chickasha made a run. Clift made a 3-point shot with just over 2:30 to play in the period to make the score 39-34. On the next possession, a Thomas Edison player received a technical foul after arguing a call with the referee.

Golightly hit the two technical free throws to make it 39-36. With 2:13 left, Alex Stewart hit a 3 to tie the game. Chickasha was only down one, 45-44 at the end of the third quarter.

Taylor Sylvester gave Chickasha its first lead at 7:30 in the fourth, putting the Lady Chicks up 46-45.

Chickasha maintained the lead for most of the fourth quarter, and the two teams traded buckets for the last three minutes with the Lady Chicks leading by as many as six points.

With 4.8 seconds left, Thomas Edison had the ball under its own basket down 67-64, but committed a turnover to seal the win for the Lady Chicks.

Chickasha will play the loser between Collinsville and East Central at 3 p.m. Saturday in Sapulpa.
