Rock Island Arts Festival finds new leader in Foster

CHICKASHA — The Chickasha Area Arts Council met to discuss leaders and fundraisers for the upcoming Rock Island Arts Festival. CAAC met at the Oasis Studios and Gallery.

Chris Foster, who was instrumental in the installation of the lights for the Festival of Light, will be taking the helm this year as the Rock Island Arts Festival Chair.

Virginia Savage, Rock Island Arts Festival Co-Chair for 2012, said that there was a pretty solid consensus to have Foster take the lead.

"We're excited to have Chris. He has a good, positive attitude," Savage said.

Planning is underway for the festival's big fundraiser, the Rock Island Arts Festival Gala, which takes place in the spring.

Darlene Troup, of the Rock Island Arts Festival Gala Committee, said that this year's gala will be an ice cream social. The event will take place on May 18 at Holy Name Hall. More details to come.

Guests will be able to enjoy a sock hop and homemade ice cream. Live artists will be making caricatures and cameos for a small fee that will go towards funding the Rock Island Arts Festival.

"We may even bring in a turntable and spin some vinyl," Troup said.

This year will mark the 5th Annual Rock Island Arts Festival, sponsored by the Chickasha Area Arts Council. The fun, free, family event usually takes place in the fall at the Rock Island Depot in Chickasha.
