Absentee balloting nears end as election looms

CHICKASHA — With the last debate behind the presidential candidates, less than a week remains for registered voters in Grady County to apply for absentee ballots for the Nov. 6 general election.

Over 835 absentee ballots have already been sent out according to the County Election Board office and several more are processed daily.

Applications for absentee ballots must be in the hands of the county election board no later than 5 p.m. on Wednesday Oct. 31 to be processed.

Election Board Secretary Susan Turner said, "We keep them under lock and key until we run them through the machines that will process their votes."

Turner showed how the ballets are kept in a room that is locked, in boxes that have three locks on them. The locks can only be unlocked when Turner, the Democratic Board Chair, and the Republican Board Chair are present on Election Day.

"A lot goes into the election process, and we are working hard to get ready for the big day," added Turner.

The poles will be opened from 7 am until 7 p.m. on Election Day. "Any registered voter who is in line to vote at 7 p.m. will be able to vote," said Turner.

Turner said voters can expect lines at most polling places but lines are likely to be shortest at mid-morning and mid-afternoon. She also encouraged voters to take their Voter Identification Cards or other proof of identity to the polls with you.
