Chicks end season with loss at Duncan

DUNCAN, Okla. — The Chickasha High School football team lost to the Duncan Demons on the road in the final game of the regular season Friday night.

The Fightin’ Chicks lost 45-21, and end their season with a 4-6 overall record, 2-5 in district 5A-1. Chickasha finished sixth place in the district standings.

"Great year, for me personally, and more for these guys, but also a tough year, frustrating year for these guys," head coach Tom Cobble said. "A lot of things had to happen for us to be where we wanted to be, and we didn't quite get there."

Chickasha quarterback Cade Morris missed his second-straight game with a broken thumb, and Brandon Wright stepped in for the final game of his senior season.

Wright went 14-for-29 with 178 yards, one touchdown and four interceptions. He was the Chicks’ leading rusher with 88 yards on 13 carries, including a 38-yard run in the third quarter.

"Moving DeShawn over there [to receiver] helped a lot, and of course Bubba coming in did a good job of throwing the football," Cobble said. "We pass protect better than we run block, so that's been kind of a strong point."

Chickasha played Duncan to a close first half, going to the locker room down only 24-14. While Chickasha had some success moving the ball through the air, it could not stop Duncan’s running game.

The Demons ran the ball right down Chickasha’s throat with 55 carries for 418 yards. Most of those went to Je’Mario McCoy, who ran for 163 yards on 15 attempts for three touchdowns.

Connor Kelly scored two touchdowns on the ground, and ran for 79 yards on 10 carries. Ryan Haley had one rush for 47 yards.

Duncan only threw the ball four times, with quarterback Tanner Morton going 2-for-4 with 39 yards.

Cobble said his defense got a little bit worn down by the relentless Duncan running attack.

"Those big guys beat on us and ran us down the middle," Cobble said. "We told our kids going in, the strength of their team is the offensive and defensive lines."

Jacoby Brown scored Chickasha’s first touchdown on a one-yard run late in the first quarter. Late in the second, DeShawn Young caught a 35-yard pass from Wright for a score.

Duncan scored four straight touchdowns after that, and Chickasha’s last score, a six-yard run by Josh Latham, came with the game already out of reach.

Shaq Oliver once again led the team in catches in his final game, catching five passes for 74 yards. Young finished with 76 yards on three catches and one touchdown.

Ryan Mosley led Chickasha in tackles with eight. Triston Hill had 7.5, Brandon Hopgood had five, and Rashaad Garrett had 4.5.

With the season done, Cobble said he was optimistic about continuing to build the program in future seasons.

"I'm just looking forward to continuing to put things together, as are our kids, and our seniors also, they want Chickasha football to get where it needs to be," Cobble said.
