Chicks end season with loss to Titans

CHICKASHA — The Chickasha High School freshman football team has been shorthanded all year for a variety of reasons, and it really hurt the Fightin' Chicks on Monday against Carl Albert at home.

The Chicks lost to the Titans 44-16 in the final game of the regular season, and got blown out in a second half during which the same 11 players were forced to play both sides of the ball almost every snap.

"We started the game with 16 kids and three or four of them get hurt, and we have to start shuffling people to position that haven't played before this year and things just got out of hand," head coach Allen Coley said.

Coley and his assistant coaches expressed how proud they were of the team's effort after the game, saying the team gave all they could ask out of them.

"I told the guys they fight, I'm proud of them," Coley said. "We're going to fight for four quarters, no matter what. It's one of those things we've battled all year between ineligibility, injuries. But the kids came to fight, and that's all you can ask."

Chickasha started the game well, getting some tough runs from tailback Taray Thomas before Kyle McNatt scored on a 30-yard swing pass from quarterback Corey Evans.

Evans converted the two-point conversion, and Chickasha went up 8-0. It was the only lead the Chicks would have all game.

Carl Albert responded with about three minutes left in the first quarter, scoring on a three-yard run on the first play of the drive, and tied the game at eight with 1:36 in the opening period.

Chickasha got good field position on the ensuing kickoff, when Thomas returned it to the Carl Albert 34-yard line.

Two Carl Albert sacks pushed Chickasha way back, however, and the Chicks ended the drive by turning the ball over on downs.

Late in the second quarter, Chickasha again got deep into Carl Albert territory, but Evans was sacked again and the drive ended on another turnover on downs.

The game was tied at eight at halftime, but when the Titans came out for the second half, their offense was much more effective than it was in the first.

"The first drive we went from the ninja set a little bit and caught them off guard and they didn't know exactly how to line up," Coley said. "At halftime, they made the adjustment and we couldn't do anything."

Carl Albert received the ball first in the second half, and used big runs to score the go-ahead touchdown in five plays and go up 16-8.

After scoring 30 consecutive points in the second half, the game was out of reach for Chickasha.

Late in the fourth quarter, Evans, who had been taking hard hits all game both running and dropping back as a passer, was sacked and fumbled the ball, turning it over to Carl Albert.

He was shaken up on the play and would not return.

For the rest of the game, Chickasha's offense consisted of direct snaps to Thomas, with some success. Thomas broke several big runs, including a 10-yard touchdown to put Chickasha in double digits.
