CHICKASHA —
Last night I saw an interview with Notre Dame linebacker Manti Te'O. If you're unaware of the situation, Te'O got catfished. What does being catfished mean exactly? Well the urban dictionary definition is, "someone who pretends to be someone they're not using Facebook or other social media to create false identities, particularly to purse deceptive online romances."
The sad thing is - so many of the people critizing Te'O for his embarrassing secret, don't understand the depths of online romance. (Nor do I for that matter, but I feel like I can sympthasize and understand maybe why he pursued someone online).
The architect of this elaborate hoax was Ronaiah Tuiasosopo. There is discussion that he used his cousin to speak as the female Te'O thought he was in a relationship with over the telephone but Tuiasosopo's lawyer claims Ronaiah had been the voice in over 1,000 hours of phone conversations.
In my opinion, people are too quick to judge this boy. He thought he was really talking to a female online and thought he was even in a relationship with her. What people should really be taking from this situation is the danger that can stem from fake online profiles and the hurt it can cause.
