Festival has good first week

CHICKASHA — After 20 year and one week of lights lighting up Shannon Springs Park every holiday season the Festival of Light is still going strong.

"Opening night went very well," Vice President of Festival of Light Mark Millsap said. "It was very well received."

Millsap said over 500 people were there the first night.

"Our real big night was Thanksgiving," he said. "There were a lot of people in town that night."

The Festival of Light survives solely on donations and Millsap said although it's early, it seems to be doing better this year than in past years.

"We were way up from where we expected to be in the first week," he said.

Millsap said he thinks the increase could be due to an animated light show that was added this year.

It takes about 30 minutes to experience the whole event according to Millsap and afterwards, patrons can treat themselves to hot chocolate and homemade cinnamon rolls.

A live nativity scene will start this weekend at the Festival of Light and will run through Dec. 21.

"It will include animals and camel rides for the kids," Millsap said.

Admission is free and donations are welcome.
