Longhorns trample Verden Tigers

VERDEN — The Alex High School basketball team went into Verden and got a road win Friday night over the Tigers.

The Longhorns won the game 46-32, and are now 8-1 this season. Verden dropped to 7-4.

Jacob Otey was the game's leading scorer with 16 points for Alex. Shaedon Castor scored 14 while controlling the Alex offense and playing harrassing defense on Verden's guards.

For Verden, the Tigers' two ball-handling guards, Dusty Keil and Tryston Morgan, were the top two leading scorers.

Morgan scored nine points, and Keil scored eight.

Verden battle foul trouble with two of its key players throughout the game.

Hunter Morgan was called for his fourth foul in the second quarter, and Dave Keil got his fourth foul in the third quarter.

Morgan fouled out in the fourth, while Keil managed to stay in the game.

The Longhorns scored the first five points of the game, forcing a Verden timeout three and a half minutes into the quarter.

Verden scored its first points with about three minutes left in the first quarter, and the Tigers scored eight straight. After the first quarter, the Tigers led 10-9.

Alex went on another run to start the second quarter, scoring seven straight to take a 16-10 lead.

This time, Verden didn't score its first points of the quarter until 2:05 to play, when Dave Keil hit two free throws. Alex led 18-14 at halftime.

Alex didn't allow Verden to make another run this time, and with Castor's 3-point shot with 2:05 to play in the third, the Longhorns took a double-digit lead at 27-16, and led 30-19 at the end of the third.

Verden got as close as six points in the fourth quarter, but the Longhorns made their free throws late in the game and didn't allow the Tigers to get any closer.

Alex played a road game against Elmore City-Pernell on Monday night, and is off until the Longhorn Classic tournament Jan. 7.

Verden's next game is scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday on the road against Sterling High School.
