Quilts by Gail is tucked away on the second floor of the Petroleum Building on Chickasha Ave.
Gail Bush said that her husband, Coy Bush, got her into quilting in the late 1970s. The couple traveled from the east to west coast teaching classes. He taught thread painting and she taught quilting, both as certified machine embroidery instructors in 1985.
Quilts by Gail opened its doors on May 15, 1985. Today, Gail said that the shop finishes a lot of quilt tops; putting in batting, stitching and lining.
The shop also does memory pieces such as t-shirt quilts for graduation, where t-shirts are applied as part of the quilt.
Quilts can be made with panels, appliques as well as by sewing each piece together. They use both computerized and hand-guided machines.
Since January of this year, the shop began participating in Quilts of Valor. Carol Capshaw is head of the project.
Every third Saturday, quilters from surrounding areas meet at the shop in Chickasha to sew quilts for wounded soldiers at the Ft. Sill Wounded Warrior Center. They take ten at a time and are able to hand them directly to the soldiers.
All of the quilting is done at Quilts by Gail. They use red, white, blue and gold color schemes for these quilts.
There will be a quilt exhibit on Nov. 16 (10 a.m. to 6 p.m.) and 17 (9 a.m. to 4 p.m.) at the Grady County Fairgrounds.
