CHICKASHA —
The Chickasha Chamber of Commerce's vision is to be known as a proactive business organization with an influential voice in the community. According to Bud Andrus, the chamber of commerce president, the chamber is also focusing its efforts on helping young students become interested in their local communities from public service careers to local government roles.
"We sponsor Junior Leadership Chickasha," Andrus said. "It is for exceptional eighth graders and is coordinated through the Chickasha Public Schools."
The aim of the program is to teach these exceptional kids how the city and county governments work, in addition to the functions of the police station, court system and health care centers in Chickasha, Andrus explained.
In the past, Junior Leadership programs in Chickasha have done numerous projects around the city, including a volunteer project with the Grady County Historical Society.
This year's Chickasha Junior Leadership class is the sixth class to graduate from the program. Today they will be visiting Mayor Hank Ross' health center, Ross Health Care. Twenty-five students are in this year's program.
However, there is no Junior Chamber of Commerce in Chickasha.
"Years ago, I was a member of the Junior Chamber of Commerce in Massachusetts," Andrus said. "Back then it was a group of businessmen aged 21 to 35. They did projects for the public good much like the Junior Social Workers do in Chickasha."
The Chamber does however sponsor a program called, "Leadership Chickasha."
"It is for adults wanting to grow their leadership skills and hopefully take a future leadership role in Chickasha," Andrus said.
