Drovers sweep home openers

CHICKASHA — The Drovers scored 11 runs to take both games in a Friday afternoon doubleheader against the University of Saint Mary.

The Drovers (8-1) got off to a strong start with Blake McMullen on the mound in game one. McMullen, who earned his third win of the season, threw 10 strikeouts and allowed just three hits. USM’s only run was not earned.

In the bottom of the second with two outs, Blake Pruett tripled to right center to bring home Chance Hill and Konrad Mueller, who had gotten on base with a hit-by-pitch and a walk.

The Spires’ Ben West then walked Owen Adams, and Austin Ardrey went in as his pinch runner. Four-year Drover Robert Summers then doubled to score Pruett and Ardrey.

Two innings later, left fielder Jared Coon singled to center field, allowing Pruett to score his second run of the day. Pruett earned his spot on base with a single and advanced with help from his teammates.

Pruett went 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs in the game, which the Drovers won 5-1.

While Pruett had a strong first game, it was Brian Vigo who stood out in the second game, helping the Drovers to a 6-3 victory. Vigo, who hit a home run, went 3-for-3 with two runs and three RBIs, while teammate Coon hit a double and a triple and scored two runs.

On the second at bat of the game, Coon tripled to center field. When third baseman Heath Wilda fouled out to first base, it gave Coon the opportunity to score and gave the Drovers an early 1-0 lead.

In the next inning, Vigo earned his first run of the day when Adams doubled along the left line. In the third innings, Coon hit a strong double and teammate Zach Gonzalez was able to bring him home with a single to left field.

With a 3-0 lead, the Drovers didn't score again until the bottom of the fifth when Vigo hit a home run to score Gonzalez and Wilda along with himself. It was Vigo’s second home run of the season.

Senior pitcher Josh Goodman took over on the mound in the top of the sixth inning when David Garcia got into a bit of trouble getting close to the end of the game. Goodman, who threw two strikeouts in 1.1 innings, got the save while Garcia earned his third win of the season.

The Drovers and Spires will finish the series with another doubleheader Saturday afternoon beginning at noon at Bill Smith Ballpark.
