Fightin' Chicks take come from behind win at El Reno

EL RENO — The Chickasha High School football team won a tight game over the El Reno Indians on Friday night, the Chicks’ first win of the season.

Chickasha won the game 15-14, and advances to 1-1 on the season.

The go-ahead touchdown was scored by lineman Jacoby Brown, who rushed for a one-yard touchdown with 8:11 to play, and also ran for the go-ahead two-point conversion.

The Fightin’ Chicks played to a scoreless tie with El Reno in the first half, which was a defensive struggle, partially due to wind and rain early on.

Cobble said he thought nerves had more to do with the slow start than the weather.

“I think both teams were really nervous, and were kind of tight to start the game,” Cobble said.

Chickasha had some opportunities to score, three times getting in the red zone but failing to score. Two of the tries resulted in turnovers on downs, and the other one was a late interception by junior quarterback Cade Morris.

Morris played a decent first half, with the exception of the interception, going 8-for-14 with 61 yards in the first half.

Two receivers had all the receptions for the Fightin’ Chicks, with Daniel Neff grabbing four receptions for 38 yards and Shaq Oliver having four catches for 23 yards.

Morris was also the team’s leading rusher in the first half, carrying the ball seven times for 18 yards. Dalvin Madison ran the ball five times for -1 yards and Neff ran twice for -3 yards.

Chickasha led El Reno in total offense, 75 to 38 in the first half, with the Chicks’ defense holding up in support of the struggling offense.

In the third quarter, both offenses scored on their first drive, as it appeared the offenses adjusted to the weather conditions and found a rhythm.

El Reno opened the second half with a six-play, 52 yard drive that ended with a rushing touchdown by quarterback Hunter Freeman. The Indians got into position with a 35 yard pass to Justin Brown.

Chickasha had no problems answering, with Dalvin Madison breaking open a 34 yard run, which brought Chickasha to the El Reno 11 yard line. Cade Morris threw a pass rolling left to Shaq Oliver for the Fightin’ Chicks’ first touchdown of the season.

El Reno continued the scoring streak, scoring another touchdown on the very next drive that ended with another Josh Freeman run. That drive went 60 yards in seven plays in 2:37.

The fourth quarter opened with the Indians leading Chickasha 14-7. Chickasha continued to use the power running game, often handing it off to fullback Josh Latham.

Brown saw some time at fullback, getting some huge lead blocks for Madison. Brown was rewarded for his work with a touchdown carry with eight minutes left in the game. Brown gave Chickasha the lead with a carry on the two-point conversion, making it 15-14.

El Reno drove the ball to the Chickasha 40 yard line, and the Chicks held the Indians to a 4th down. A false start penalty moved El Reno back, but the Indians still went for a 4th and 10. The Chickasha defense held up and forced the turnover with 5:11 remaining.

Chickasha turned the ball over on downs on its next drive, but with El Reno up against the clock, the Fightin’ Chicks played some tight pass defense to force a turnover on downs as well, and ran out the clock.

Madison finished the game with 83 yards rushing on 12 carries. Morris ran 13 times for 46 yards. Morris finished the game with 76 yards passing, one touchdown and one interception on 10-for-16 passing.

Rashawn Thomas was Chickasha’s leading tackler with six tackles. Levi Kell had 5.5 tackles.

Chickasha’s next game is the homecoming matchup with Cache at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14 at Memorial Stadium in Chickasha.

“You just build on [this win],” Cobble said. “We came out here two years in a row and got wins, and you’ve got to learn to do that.”delia essiti sa adia de landebi tatur, nus eumque vellum quiatata placcus
