CHICKASHA —
Last night was Chickasha High School’s homecoming football game against the Cache Bulldogs. The Fightin’ Chicks pulled off a 14-7 victory in the end.
With the win, Chickasha advances to 2-1 this season.
The crowd began the game with a moment of silence for Bob Martin, Chickasha’s football and basketball announcer that recently lost a battle with cancer.
Cache running back Deverick Richardson broke the first big play of the game after a 61-yard run that got them to the one yard line. Richardson ran it in on the next play to give the Bulldogs a 7-0 lead.
The Fightin’ Chicks’ offense looked weak after a fumble at the five yard line with a little over seven minutes to go before halftime.
Chickasha’s Evan Copeland had a 16-yard interception return in the third quarter, which led to more offensive opportunities for the Chicks.
Shaq Oliver made a diving catch for a second down at the 37 yard line.
Shortly after, Kyle Carroll intercepted the ball for the Bulldogs after a weak pass by quarterback Cade Morris.
Chickasha stepped up its defense, resulting in a short field goal attempt from the Bulldogs, which they missed.
“The defense does that,” Cobble said. “They just play along and play along and play along, but then when it really comes time, and it gets to the end of the game, they just seem to hit another gear.”
Deverick Richardson avoided heavy pressure from the Fightin’ Chicks and attempted to switch directions around the defensive line, only to lose two yards.
Running back Daniel Neff gave Chickasha the final touchdown they needed to secure their lead for the rest of the fourth quarter.
“The guys in the press box saw what they were doing,” head coach Tom Cobble said. “They were kind of overloading. The blocking was perfect and he had a great run.”
Cache changed its defensive strategy in the second half, which gave Chickasha some trouble. Cobble and the team stuck to the game plan, and it paid off in the end.
“They played a lot of five-man front in the first half,” Cobble said. “Then they figured out they probably couldn’t stop us. Then they went to a six-man front, which gave us a little trouble, so we went to a spread and stuttered and stuttered, then we finally came back and just ran the ball.”
Morris went 9-for-16 with 76 yards and one interception. He also rushed 11 times for 85 yards.
Neff was the leading rusher with 10 carries and 122 yards. Including the 59-yard run that gave the Chicks’ the lead.
Oliver had seven catches for 52 yards.
Jacoby Brown lead the team with tackles with eight tackles and one sack.
Chickasha’s next game is a road game against Altus, scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Sept. 21.
