CHICKASHA —
Nick Robertson, of Gandhi Hospital, may be a natural born performer.
Robertson said that when he was about five, his cousins would give him quarters in exchange for a vocal performance of "Rawhide."
These days, Robertson sings as well as plays guitar and keyboard for Gandhi Hospital. The three piece band includes Todd Hill, who plays bass and Rocky Lee who plays drums.
Robertson said he went to school with Lee and met Hill at the University of Science and Arts Oklahoma among a group of students who played music.
This will not be the band's first venture to the festival. However, it will be their first time to headline at the annual art festival which has drawn visitors from around the state.
Robertson describes Gandhi Hospital's music as a cross between indie and psychedelic rock.
The band has put together a playlist with a mix of slow and fast songs that should have a wide appeal.
Robertson began playing the guitar six years ago, when the band formed. However, he told a story which could point to an inherent interest in performing.
When writing a song, the band first puts the music into place. Robertson said that he writes the lyrics based on how the music makes him feel or what it reminds him of.
"Sometimes I invent a story out of thin air and sometimes I base them on events in my life," he said.
Gandhi Hospital, will be headlining the Rock Island Arts Festival this Saturday night, 8 p.m., Sept. 29 on the main stage at the Rock Island Depot.
