Rock Island sculpture gets timeless name

CHICKASHA — "It takes a village to raise a sculpture, " Julie Julie Bohannon, former president of the Chickasha Area Arts Council, said at the dedication ceremony for the sculpture at the Rock Island Depot.

The sculpture which has stood at the East end of Chickasha Ave. finally has a name: Tracks of Time.

The sculpture was named by Ladonna Gray. Over 100 names had been submitted for the sculpture.

Sue Getman, Chickasha Area Arts Council Treasurer, said that the sculpture was the result of a lot of hard work on the part of CAAC, the community and many local and state agencies.

Even though Tracks of Time has been planted in the ground and finally named, Getman said.

"As a council, we are never at rest," she said. The Chickasha Area Arts Council will be planning their next project on Monday, at 7 p.m. in the Chickasha Public Library meeting room.

That CAAC was the only entity in Oklahoma that got a grant in 2010, when they received $10,000. Combined with in-kind donations, the total cost of the sculpture was $80,000.

The artist, Archie Held said that he wanted to capture the essence of Chickasha.

Held said that he has always felt welcome at Chickasha and is proud of the sculpture. He spent three days researching Chickasha's history in order to capture that aspect in his work.

Held said that he wanted the sculpture to be an iconic form. He said that he was influenced by the image of a cowcatcher, which melds together Chickasha's history in both the railroad as well as agriculture.

Stewart Fairburn, Chickasha City Manager, said that the project showed what community involvement can accomplish. He said that he wanted the sculpture to also represent the revitalization of downtown and a symbol of the community.

Mayor Hank Ross said agreed that the sculpture should be used a symbol of downtown Chickasha's rebirth.

"4th and Grand may be the heart of Chickasha, but downtown is the soul … We haven't listened to the soul of our city. I think it's very important that we rectify that."
