Relay for Life prepares for long list of fundraisers

CHICKASHA — Relay for Life Chickasha has big goals this year, one of them being to raise $100,000 for the American Cancer Society.

At the Relay for Life Kickoff at Bible Baptist Church on Jan. 24, Jeanette Loutsch gave participants information on joining, forming teams and meeting times.

The relay will start at 7 p.m. on June 7 and will end at 7 a.m. on June 8 at the University of Science and Arts of Oklahoma oval.

Loutsch outlined emphasis goals for Relay this year. The first is involving and honoring survivors. She asked those at the kickoff meeting to let the committee know of any survivors so they can be invited to be honored at the relay.

The second goal is more visual, packing the USAO oval with glowing luminaria. According to her presentation, luminaria “honors those that are winning the fight,” “remembers those that have lost their fight” and “honors their caregivers.” Sale of candle bags count towards team money levels.

The third goal is to educate people about the services the American Cancer Society has available in the Chickasha area.

The main thing that each member of a Relay for Life team needs is commitment.

Each member is required to pay a $10 commitment fee, raise $100 to be eligible for a shirt, commit to stay the night of the relay, have at least one member on the path all night and have at least one member attend team captain meetings. Members are also asked to fund-raise big and ask help from the committee.

Those who did not register at the kickoff last Thursday can also register online.

The Relay for Life Team Captain meetings have already been scheduled: Feb. 27, March 27, April 24 and May 22. All meetings are at noon except for the May 22 meeting, which takes place between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Meetings will take place in the basement of Five Oaks Medical Facility. Lunch is provided.

Arguably Relay for Life’s most adorable event, Bark for Life is planned for April 6 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the USAO oval. More details to come.
