“The Essentials of Family History Research"

— “The Essentials of Family History Research” has been revised to assist and guide novice family historians in their research. It is one in the series “Sources and Resources” published by the Southwest Oklahoma Genealogical Society.

It is truly essential to those beginning their research and one that should be kept for later reference. It describes the importance of citing sources and keeping logs; joining surname groups; writing letters that will prompt a response; filling out ancestral charts and family group sheets; and it provides charts that track cousins and other family relationships.

It’s 80+ pages cover researching female, “black sheep,” African American and Native American ancestors; understanding the Julian and Gregorian calendars; researching in the DAR, the National Archives and the Library of Congress; using DNA; obtaining documents through the Freedom of Information Act; preparing a health history; using the internet; accessing the inter-library loan system and PERSI; getting documents translated; and using the facilities of the Mormon Church’s Family History Library and Centers. It lists websites in each of these categories plus others for researching newspapers, books, journals and city directories. It offers guides to researching cemetery, census, military, land and vital records. And there are a dozen logs and forms that can be reproduced to keep track of research efforts.
