Inter-tribal group prepares for pow wow

CHICKASHA — The Inter-Tribal Heritage Club hopes to draw the community out to its Spring Pow Wow on April 6 at the University of Science and Arts Oklahoma.

There is a lot to look forward to. The attractions include a Native American dance contest, raffles, vendors and a dinner.

Greg Revelle, ITHC President said that the club is looking for more activities to keep the party going, such as storytellers.

Every year, Native American dance groups participate in the dance competition at the pow wow.

The purpose of the ITHC at USAO is to bring Native American and non-Native American students together to learn about Native American culture.

This year, ITHC's goal is to host a Native American production at USAO.

ITHC is looking for donations from businesses or individuals. This includes items and prizes for the raffles at the pow wow.

March 23 is the deadline to donate to the 2013 Spring Pow Wow, but according to Revelle, the biggest contribution that the community can provide is to come out to enjoy the pow wow.

"The more people that can come out and enjoy the pow wow, the better," Revelle said. ITHC must approve the event every year with USAO, and the more people that attend the event, the more likely the event is to be approved, Revelle said.

As a history major, Revelle said that his interest in Native American culture was sparked in his classes with Dr. Lee Hester, Associate Professor of American Indian Studies. Hester needed help with ITHC this year, and Revelle said that as much as his professor had helped him over the years, he felt he owed Dr. Hester.

Learning about Native American culture is important, Revelle said, particularly in Oklahoma.

"It's important to realize the sacrifice that they made, whether they wanted to or not."

Alabama Ave/Chickasha, OK, 73018. ITHC is a non-profit organization. Donations will be tax exempt. Upon receipt of a donation, a thank you note with a tax ID number will serve as a receipt for tax purposes.
