DEL CITY, Okla. —
The Chickasha High School volleyball team’s season ended Tuesday night after a loss to Northwest Classen in the first round of the regional playoffs at Christian Heritage Academy.
The Lady Chicks lost in four games: 22-25, 12-25, 25-23 and 5-25. Their final record for the 2012 season is 6-20.
Despite going against a Lady Knights team that came into the match with a 26-3 record, Chickasha played with a ton of confidence early on, barely losing the first game.
“First game, we let it slip away,” head coach Nancy Waters said. “Plain and simple, we had them.”
Chickasha led 20-16 at one point in the first game, but fell victim to a rally by Northwest Classen and lost the game.
The Lady Knights carried the momentum of the comeback win into the second game, in which they beat Chickasha rather handedly.
The Lady Chicks were within one point at 12-11, but Northwest Classen rattled off nine straight points on their way to going up 2-0 in the match.
With their season on the line, Chickasha came back strong in game three, pulling off a win to extend the match at least one more game.
“Game three, we came out with energy and we were attacking,” Waters said. “I told them when we started that this is what we want to do. We have to attack, attack, attack.”
The third game was close all the way through. Chickasha got up 24-21, but Northwest Classen made a small run that looked for a moment like it would put the Lady Chicks away for good. Chickasha was able to close it out, however.
After the third game, Chickasha came out unexpectedly flat, and it showed in the lopsided loss in the deciding game.
“Even after we won that game, it was like somebody popped that balloon, like ‘Okay, we won one game. That’s good,’” Waters said. “And I don’t think that was in their minds, but that’s what it looked like.”
The Lady Knights buried Chickasha with a big 15-0 run to win easily and advance to the next round.
“We talked about that,” Waters said. “We can’t give up runs. We can give up a point or two, but we can’t give up runs.”
Chloe Reyes led the team in kills with five, followed by Ashley Hannah with three and Alei Gann with two.
Rory Troub had eight digs to lead the Chicks, and Hannah had seven. The Lady Chicks had four aces, two by Kaydee King and one each by Hannah and Gann.
